If you haven't seen boardgamizer.com yet go there now. It's an awesome site that challenges your creativity. It randomly gives you themes and mechanics to design a new game. This is my first challenge and I can say it's pretty exciting.
I would normally just load a screen shot of the generated idea but the page didn't load properly so I'll just write it down.
Mechanics Rock-Paper-Scissors
Theme Amusement Park
Victory Most Variety
Constraint Can be played with Grandma
So that's what I got. Not a huge fan of Rock-Paper-Scissors, but I think I can make it work. The theme and victory condition don't seem too tough and the constraint of being played with Grandma isn't a huge constraint.
Theme and Victory
The first thing that came to mind was everyone is building a theme park and wants to build the best one they can. No one wants an amusement park with the same rides everywhere. Each player is trying to collect different rides that he or she can put in her park. So the player with the most variety in the park will win.
Rock-Paper-Scissors
This part was a little tough for me. I like games that have more than 2 people and when you bring in Rock-Paper-Scissors it can be tough. If everyone played there would be lots of ties and it just would become a mess. So I need a way to break it up into a 1v1 scenario. So I came up with the idea of you play either the person to your left or the person to your right. What are you playing for? A ride for you park.
The Game
I don't yet have a working title but we'll see if I do at the end of this. The object of the game is to have the most variety in your park. You do this by collecting rides that are being put out.
The game starts and everyone has 2 cards: left and right. Then rides are dealt out in between each player. Here comes the first choice. Does the player want the ride on his left or the ride on his right? Each player now selects a left or right card. That's the ride she will play Rock-Paper-Scissors for. Each player reveals his card. If there is only one person going for a ride, she gets it. If 2 people want the same ride, battle! The players play Rock-Paper-Scissors to get the card. Only 1 round is played unless a tie happens and they just go again.
The player that wins the card gets to place it in her park. Each player has room for 6 rides in his park. Once each player has 6 rides the game ends. Players can swap card if they get to 6 and find something better.
The Cards
The ride cards are just 6 different rides with 6 different values. The numbers and ride types affect the variety of each player. The numbers are also there as a tie breaker and each player must have a minimum number of points for the park to be valid.
Conclusion
So that's the game. I didn't think of a name yet but it's so simple Grandma could play it. A nice card game with 88 cards and can play 4-8 players. I imagine it plays pretty fast too. I hope to get a prototype of it soon and possibly upload a print-and-play.
Let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or more.
